The data is based on aerial imagery and stereophotogramatic analysis of the Federal Office of Topography, Switzerland (swisstopo) within the framework of the Topographic Landscape Model of Switzerland (swissTLM3D). Furthermore, the dataset has been glaciologically revised in the frame of GLAMOS (Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland, ETH Zurich, University of Zurich, University of Fribourg, Switzerland). The data is delivered as a shapefile. 2020

Lengthchange

DOI Description Date Remarks
10.18750/lengthchange.2018.r2018 Variations of the glacier length are measured annually in fall at the tongues of all larger and on many of the smaller Swiss glaciers and provide an overview of their long-term fluctuations. The dataset contains all available observations up to present and is delivered as a .csv file. 2018

Massbalance

DOI Description Date Remarks
10.18750/massbalance.2018.r2018 Direct measurements of glacier mass balance - the sum of snow accumulation and snow/ice melt - are carried out on selected glaciers in Switzerland. Based on point observations, typically acquired in April/May and September, glacier-wide quantities of seasonal mass balance (winter/summer/annual) are evaluated, expressed as a an area-averaged value of water eqivalent. The dataset contains all available observations up to present and is delivered as four separate .csv files with results both for the exact measurement periods (observation, varying between the years) and the hydrological year (fixdate), as well as for glacier-wide quantities and for individual elevation bins. 2018

Massbalance Point

DOI Description Date Remarks
10.18750/massbalance.point.2020.r2020 Direct observations of point glacier mass balance have been carried out at one up to several dozens of sites on more than 50 individual glaciers in the Swiss Alps over the past century. The measurements represent the basis for seasonal mass balance monitoring. Data are aggregated to three time periods - annual (referring to a time interval of about 1 year, e.g. Oct.-Sept.), winter (referring to an entire winter season, e.g. Oct.-May), or intermediate (referring to an arbitrary period of a day up to several months). Metadata and estimated uncertainties are specified for different variables according to a system of quality indicators. 2020

Volumechange

DOI Description Date Remarks
10.18750/volumechange.2018.r2018 The comparison of digital elevation models derived from photogrammetrical analysis of aerial photographs or evaluation of historical maps allows the determination of glacier ice volume changes over periods of years to decades. Ice volume changes have been converted to geodetic mass balances assuming a density of volume change of 850 kg m-3. The dataset contains all available observations of selected Swiss glaciers up to present and is delivered as a .csv file. 2018

10.18752/intrep_2 Considerations for setting up new long-term mass balance monitoring programmes in the Reuss and Inn basin Huss, Matthias This internal GLAMOS report provides a detailed evaluation of the potential of glaciers in the Reuss and Inn basin to act as long-term sites for glacier mass balance monitoring. Considerations on the feasibility and durability of long-term observations are made. The report is provided in .pdf format. 2019
10.18752/intrep_3 Computation of glacier-wide mass balance: evaluating the potential of the linear mass balance model Huss, Matthias The present report provides an in-depth evaluation of the so-called linear mass balance model using GLAMOS data. The aim is to shed light on the potential of this approach but also to emphasize the related drawbacks and problems. 2020
10.18752/intrep_4 Revised Strategy for Monitoring Glacier Length Variation Bauder, Andreas The report evaluates a revised strategy for the monitoring of glacier length variations.Existing measurements are analysed, a new multi-level measurement concept is proposed and the a how to implement. 2020
10.18752/intrep_5 A Best Practice Guide for long-term glacier monitoring in Switzerland Kurzböck, Claudia; Huss, Matthias The Best Practice Guide for glacier monitoring documents past and present techniques of glacier observation in the Swiss Alps. It is focused on approaches used in the frame of GLAMOS and aims at representing a benchmark for future monitoring activities. The variables glacier mass balance, length change, and glacier inventory are covered regarding data acquisition, evaluation and archiving. 2021
